Sometimes a day begins quite innocently – with an appointment for a walk through the city center of Leipzig, two mothers, two little boys and the firm conviction: „The weather will hold.“
I’ve known Jennifer for many years. She was already in my kangaroo salsa classes with her first child – and now she’s dancing again with her second son, Lukas. Lukas loves snuggling up to his mom and being gently rocked to the rhythm of Latin American music. Over the years, a deep connection has developed between Jennifer and me – trust, respect, and growing together as mothers.
That day I was out with my two-year-old Alessandro, and Jennifer was carrying her five-month-old Lukas in a baby carrier. And then – without much warning – the rain started. Not just a drizzle. But a real downpour. Within minutes we were soaked and had to act fast. With two small children, you don’t wait around. You make a decision.
When Plan A spontaneously becomes Plan B
Luckily, we were right in the city center – and quickly found refuge in the Höfe am Brühl shopping center . For those who haven’t been: it really is like a small city within a city. Several levels, over 100 shops, two supermarkets, and plenty of options for relaxed and healthy dining – all bright, spacious, and family-friendly.
What immediately relaxed me: space. Lots of space.
Alessandro could move around without me constantly worrying he’d bump into something. The wide aisles are ideal for little explorers. And Jennifer was overjoyed to find out they could rent a buggy on site. After spending some time in the baby carrier, she was glad to be able to transport Lukas in a different way for a change. These little services make a huge difference in a mom’s daily life.
A little bit of „us“ amidst diapers and laundry
Honestly? It had been ages since we’d taken time for ourselves. No classes, no appointments – just us.
So we seized the opportunity. We went to a clothing store, Mein Fischer , browsed through the racks, laughed, and held each other’s children while the other briefly disappeared into the fitting room. This uncomplicated „I’ve got it – you try it on in peace“ is priceless. It’s precisely in these moments that you feel not only like a mother, but also like a woman.
I also had a voucher for dm-drogerie markt , so we made a stop there. And yes, I stand by it: dm is a little universe for moms. From organic snacks for toddlers to personal care products and things you didn’t even know you needed. We found healthy snacks for Alessandro—and a few little things for ourselves.
Mom’s reality: When things suddenly become urgent
In the middle of our stroll came the classic sentence: „Mommy, pee-pee!“
Anyone who’s ever been out with a two-year-old knows: Now. Immediately.
Luckily, a toilet wasn’t far away – clean, spacious, with child seat attachments for little bottoms and a wonderfully equipped changing area. Jennifer was able to change Lukas’s diaper in peace and then even retreat briefly to breastfeed. Having this space without judgmental looks or stress – that means so much.
After our potty break and snack, we discovered cozy sofas on the second floor. While Alessandro happily nibbled away, we realized: Now the moms are hungry too.
Enjoying together – with little rascals at the table
So we treated ourselves to something delicious at Best Maza , a restaurant with fresh Levantine cuisine. Lots of vegetables, hummus, warm pita, aromatic spices – just what we needed for a gray, rainy day.
Of course, Alessandro couldn’t resist „just trying“ it again and again – which in reality meant that part of my plate ended up in his stomach too. But you know what? That’s exactly how it should be. Full, satisfied, and laughing.
Small detours with wide eyes
Just as we decided to slowly head towards the exit, Alessandro spotted the LEGO Store. And that made it clear: one more stop.
Among colorful stones, wide-eyed children, and other little attractions waiting around every corner, time flew by. And when we finally stepped back outside – there he was, suddenly.

The sun.
More than just a Plan B
What began as a rainy walk turned into an afternoon filled with ease. No perfectionism, no meticulously planned itinerary – just flexibility, friendship, and a place that gave us space: to move, to breastfeed, to laugh, to breathe.
For us, it was a reminder that everyday life as a mom isn’t about everything running perfectly. It’s about finding solutions that feel good, knowing places where you’re welcome, and having friends by your side who can make even a downpour feel like a gift.
Whether rain or shine – sometimes all it takes is a little spontaneity to turn a chaotic moment into a truly beautiful one.💛
